Skilled Migrant Residence
Licensed and qualified Adviser Mike Bell explains which
Expressions of Interest (EOI) are currently being selected.
The Skilled Migrant Category is a popular route to New Zealand residency based on a points system. It is for migrants who have important skills and experience that New Zealand employers need but cannot find within the country.
There are a number of requirements to meet in applying for a Skilled Migrant Category visa which include proving good health, character and English language skills.
Principle applicants need to work in an occupation Immigration New Zealand considers to be ‘skilled’ and must be suitably qualified. There are 665 ‘skilled’ jobs, from Plasterer to Pig Farmer to Physicist - generally if a job requires specialist, technical or managerial experience it is likely to be ‘skilled’. Some jobs are also listed as being in Absolute Skill Shortage in New Zealand.
Applications are assessed under a points system with points awarded for areas including age, qualifications, work experience and employment. To begin applicants need at least 100 points (potentially 140 if they do not have a suitable job offer in New Zealand) and must be under 56 years of age.
The Skilled Migrant Category Process
Skilled Migrant Category application process has two stages:
The expression of interest (EOI) stage, and the application stage.
The EOI process costs $530 for the online form.
On the EOI form you provide lots of information about yourself, family, occupation, qualifications etc, which you are then awarded points for.
If your EOI is selected, Immigration New Zealand (INZ) will complete a preliminary assessment of the information you provided and they may invite you to apply for residence.
You will be given four months to lodge the residency application from the date you receive your Invitation to Apply (ITA). You send Immigration New Zealand your application and supporting
documents along with the INZ application fee.
Then the processing of the application starts. The length of time this takes depends on many factors but on average will take 6 - 18 months.
Currently our residence applications lodged in Christchurch are processed between 2 and 8 months.
Example of our professional fees: Full Visa Service from $4,700 NZD for the principle applicant, additional family members are charged at $500 for partner and $250 for children.
OUR FEES page will show you the costs for each of the different types of services we provide.
